Throwing Clay

Throwing Clay

Pulling wire through thick slab.

Pawing the clay --

it rests gently, quietly in my palms.

Hands slap the clay

left to right

like a pendulum.

The sound of skin on skin.

The sound of discipline

after bad behavior.

Throwing clay to wheel --

a satisfying slap.

The genesis.

Slipping my hands into the sloshing bucket

like clothes falling to the floor at day’s end.

Release overcomes me.

Foot to pedal --

the motor’s hum.

Unsymmetrical spinning slab.

Pelvis tilts down --

Hips slide back --

Chest dips forward,

a sipping bird.

Wet hands connect.

My hand’s right heel drives the slab down

As the left palm guides inward.

Until the slab spins

motionless.
